Message I live in Ontario and I imported a Z into canada 2 years ago. It's a serious pain in the ass, but there is a way around the system if you know someone living in canada who's a US citizen. Here's what you'll need if you do things the proper way:

If you buy the car, you'll need the ownership signed over to you, if you're driving the car back to ontario you need to get a temporary license for each state you drive through. At the border, you'll need need the ownership, and documents from nissan indicating if there were any recalls for the car. There's also a document regarding emissions that states whether the emissions on this car are legal in Canada or not - for a number of cars made in the US, emissions fall short of the canadian standards. Luckily there's no problem with the Z, but you do need this document which i think you can get from canada customs and revenue. At this point, you have no choice but to leave the vehicle at the border for 3 days. Canada customs and revenue has to do an inspection on the car and some paperwork - this is non-negotiable. They'll make you pay pst at the border i beleive. In 1999, they got rid of any duty taxes that people used to have to pay when importing vehicles from the states. All you have to pay is gst and pst on the blue book value of the car or the price you paid(whichever is higher). When you go register the car in your name in canada, you'll need the ownership again, a safety test, emissions test, and insurance(for plates). At the border when the inspect the vehicle, it's possible that they could tell you to get a new exhaust or put child safety seat belt clips on your car - things to that nature. It's not really that complicated, but i had a hell of a time tracking down all this information.

here's what i did:

found a friend who's a us citizen but going to school in canada. bought the car and put it in his name. he had no problems taking the car across the borders and didn't need any paperwork besides the ownership signed over in his name. since he's a us citizen, he was exempt from paying pst at the border(you'll never have to pay this now). Once we got back home, the local canada customs and revenue agency had to inspect the car before he could licence it in ontario. they looked at it for about 1 minute before they said it's ok and gave us a piece of paper approving this(you'll need this to get the ownership). We went to the local license bureau, put the car in my friends name, he was exempt from gst at that point, it only cost me a safety and emissions test which he needed and which you'll need shortly anyway. Now that my friend had an ontario ownership for this car, he simply signed it over to me. I used the same safety and emissions test from before when putting the ownership in my name.
