Message it creates a lot of turbulance and reduce fuel economy .. always keep your tailgate closed, as the air in the truck bed is pushed down and form a smoth surface for the air to flow above it .. it's like having a cover over the bed ..
As far as the bumper on his Z .. you are correct he need holes to reduce drag.
