H.I.D means High intensity discharge which is a method that automakers now use to make brighter headlights. HID's are not bulbs per se, but rather like sealed chambers. They work by running current through a radiant gas like Xenon. The chemical reaction between the electricity and the gas gives off a very bright light of varying colors depending on the gas the automaker uses. Thats why BMW' HID's and Lexus HID's have a different tint to them...they use a different radiant gas. Same with Audi and Cadillac. They all give off a different tint because they use different gases. Now, you can buy authentic HID replacement headlamps for the Z which actually use the current/gas method. They are pricey, though and a pain in the ass. I hate removing the headlamps on a Z. Aftermarket HID look-a-like bulbs are not HID at all. They are conventional bulbs that have a blue/purple/white tinting to them that make them LOOK like HID's. Some bulb manufacturers do however claim to have some sort of radiant gas in their bulbs. Also, the manufacturers may also raise the wattage of the bulb to make them appear brighter. This sometimes can burn out your electrical connections on your headlamps, so be careful. Different manufacturers of HID look alike bulbs are LUKS, PIAA, CATZ, SILVANIA amongst others. 9005/9006 are just the size of the bulbs for the Z. 9005's are the highbeams if I remember correctly, while the 9006 are the low beams. Hope this helps.
