Seems kind of silly to go from mechanical energy to hydraulic and then back to mechanical again since there are going to be efficiency losses in each form and between forms. I guess the advantage is that hydraulic lines are much more "routable" than mechanical power transmisson methods (belts, gears, shafts, etc.).
