Great looking results (I'll post pics soon) leaving the calipers on the car, removing the disc pads, stuffing a sheet of newspaper into the hole with the caliper pots, one sheet around the rotor, and a few more sheets around the fender well. Any little extra paint that gets on the rotor can be lightly sanded off in a few seconds. You never see the back of the caliper but you can cover >90% of it with it on the car. Sounds to me like you're painting the coats on too heavy. I used six, light coats of brake caliper paint. The metal didn't start looking bright red until about the fourth coat.
