Most amps double their power when the load is cut in half. So if you want 400 watts, then you use a 200 watt amp running a 2 ohm load. You sound like you're talking about a subwoofer setup. If you'll be bridging the amp then you're most likely going to get more power as well. I run a mono Power 500 on a single dual voice coil (4ohm/coil) 12". I wired the VCs in parallel. The amp is seeing a 2 ohm load and is nearly doubling it's power output, it also runs pretty hot, but has yet to be bothered by that.
