Message	install is done, with some finesse, with the tranny in, from inside the car. I know when I was sixteen we just took a hacksaw and shortened the shifter on my Fiat Spyder. Sure, that made it shorter but it also decreases your leverage. For best results, the short shifter needs to be engineered, not just lopped off. I wouldn't do it myself, I would buy one from Woody or the other guy, SilverTwin from Ohio I think his name is.
