Message 16g is fine for speaker wire. Check the gain setting on your amp. It may be cranked all the way up and causing the amp to cut out. Also, check the fuse in the amp and make sure it is the corect amperage.
Did you get bigger power wire?
Remove the stickers and wing. Your wing may be conducting electricity through the body of the car and shorting your amp out.
