first look for what your life style is, then find a dog that would fit that. For instance I like to hike, camp, outdoors in general and wanted a guard dog as well, but something that is also great with people and low maintenance (short hair)so I got 2 german Boxers. I didn't know how destructive they were and now I have a back yard that looks like Iraq. But I love them to death. Also health the more exotic the breed the more health problems they have e.i. Bulldogs, mastiff, sharpee, etc, have mayor heart, skin, kidney, hip problems so vet costs are pretty high. So to save your self a heartache, I say that because it is tough to let an animal go after you both have grown close to eachother so read about them and then decide. After that look into some organizations, you may be given a great friend a chance to live. I got my boxers at first as foster dogs, simple because I didn't think that anything could replace my gone best friends (2 English Bulldogs I had for 11 yrs)so it was a trial period. I found in the internet a site called Boxer boodies.com then we felt in love with them and decided to adopt them for a fee, more like a donation to the group $100 each with all shots mayor checkup and pedigrees so we decided to give more than that. Two years later I would give anything for them. Good luck in your search
