Message are usually pretty bad. The relative lack of space and material to absorb an impact, combined with the large expanse that the door/window cover relative to their thickness, the close proximity of occupants to the doors, and the higher ride height of the truck bumper and hood do not bode well for those on the impacted side of the car. I have seen IIHS crash test videos in which the dummies' heads have actually gone through the side window and impacted the hood of the truck. This was one of the main impetuses for side-curtain air-bags, especially given the SUV craze of somewhat recent history.

I understand your feelings of helplessness. In our daily lives, even though at some points it may seem smaller than at other times, we feel that we have some sense of choice and power over our lives and what is going on around us. Something like this really shakes that sense influence and makes us look at our lives in a different way.

I must commend you. In this busy day and age, some people may not have even gone to check on those in the accident. Or even called 911 for that matter. You did what you could and that was all you could do. I don't know the details of the accident, but your prescence may have comforted the driver of the car in their final minutes.

I forget who told me this, but someone once said to treat every green light like it's flashing yellow. You never know who's coming the other way, trying to beat that red light, or whose brakes aren't so good, or who just isn't paying attention. Regardless of fault, there are some things all the insurance money in the world can't bring back. Be careful out there guys...
