Theoretically, the higher the number, the faster the memory should be.

But reviewers found that in reality, the "faster" PC3200 had more wait states which increased its latency. The DDR400 memory is usually CAS3 instead of CAS2. So it's better to have 333 mhz memory with less wait states than 400 mhz memory with more wait states.

In the case of the Nforce2 chipset, PC2100 (266 mhz memory) is the fastest on it with most Athlons. That's because the Nforce2 is heavily optimised for synchronous operation and the Athlons front side bus is 266 mhz. If you get a newer Athlon with 333 mhz FSB, then get the PC2700 (333 mhz memory) that matches its FSB.
