Message Wider tire does NOT mean more friction. To the first order, friction force is a constant (coef of friction) times weight. Note that area of contact patch does NOT matter.

The reason wider tires (in dry conditions) are better is really heat dissipation, not more friction.

For snow I'd think you would want a narrower tire to cut through and get traction, and some sharp edges (spikes) for ice.
