As hot gasses expand, they cool. Cool exhaust doesn't flow as well as hot exhaust. Therefore, by going up to a 3" pipe instead of a 2 1/2" pipe, the flow of air is slower out of the pipe with a 3" one(more volume to fill). Slower exhaust velocity can ultimately lead to backpressure at certain rpms. And ANY amount of backpressure is bad(i.e. this is why dumps are good on a turbo car). Not only that, but typicly a 2 1/2" system is gonna be cheaper than a complete 3" system. Why spend more money if it's not gonna give an increase in power? Unless you've got ricer thinking where bigger is always better!
