Message The Typhoon class submarines (also known as Akula class to the Russians) are actually made from 2 delta class submarine hulls welded side by side. The Typhoon class subs are the largest submarines ever built. It has 2 nuclear reactors driving 2 steam turbines of 50,000 hp each.

It's a nuclear missile sub. Here you can see a picture of a couple of the missile tube doors open (it has 20 in total):

And here's a picture of what those hatch doors look like in real life:

The Kursk is the one that sunk, it's a much smaller sub (but still big), being an attack sub.
