Message are 2 stroke diesel engines with intake valves and exhaust ports at the bottom of the cylinder sleeves. They require a supercharger to run NA. That is where the 8-71 and 6-71 roots type blowers comes from . The 8-71 nomenclature means 8 cylinders and 71 cubes per cylinder . They can be turbocharged on top of the blower. The biggest detroit diesel I saw when I was bus mechanic in my younger days was a 12-71! Which was a V-12 of course. It was a monster. Can't remember if it was turbo charged or not.
