Message you just covered about 2 years worth of material science courses in one post! As you very well said, we have the technology to do miracles with alloys, but at some point it's just more reasonable to scrap the part rather than try to anneal/quench it and spend 2000$ on a 500$ wheel.

It's very nice to see that people in the material industry actually use properties like "eutectic point" and "microstructure", as far as I was concerned, these things were just definitions I had to learn for the final exam!

Next time I plow into a curb, instead of screaming out "Ohh shit, my wheel's bent", I'll scream out "Ohh shit, I've created fracture sites and dislocations in my wheel!" hehehe
