However, most people modify knowing FULL well that you sacrifice a little bit of time on parts for more power. In this case, the gain is minimal(see note below) compared to the possible losses. At this point, not ONE piece of hard evidence has shown that a pulley has or has not caused any problems on a Z. We've had quite a few people happen to have one installed when they had a bigger problem, but that's not scientific data.
 Sadly, we may never have that kind of data. You modify at your own risk.
 Note:To me the UDP gains are nowhere near "huge", as you stated. ESPECIALLY when considering the potential engine  damage. The HP gains are negligible IMO. I guess we should define what huge is  ;) I also don't want to rehash the tired old arguments, but I felt compelled to represent the other school of thought.
