You said you have an amp that puts out 40WRMS/channel. Do you actually have an amp that puts that out or is that the amplification designed into your head unit? Thats kind of a low number for an "amp". As for the speakers your looking at, generally a speaker that is being driven in its upper power range will perform louder(somewhat exponentially) as it reaches its threshold. If you drive it close to or past its rated power though, youll get distortion. The distortion should be available for each speaker at a certain level, normally at its peak power level, and then some value for nominal distortion. So, if you decide to go with the 50W speaklers, that would probably be a good choice for the 40W/channel that you have available(and are probably less) BUT, if you ever upgrade to more power, you will need more speaker, as your getting pretty close to the edge there...I personally would go with the 90W speakers...
