I have an amp that puts out 40 watts RMS per channel (4 channel). I'm looking for 6.5" components to put in the doors. I'm on a budget, and I have narrowed it down to basically two competitors: Infinity Reference Series 605cs, and Kenwood KFC-P603. They are $140 and $160, repspectively. The power ranges are 2-90 watts RMS for the Infinities and 8-50 watts RMS for the Kenwoods. First question: Any preference between the two speakers in general quality? Second question: Would 50 watt speakers (the kenwoods) be better suited to a 40W amp than 90W speakers. I read that somewhere i think, that your amp should drive the speakers in like the upper third of their power range. Are there any detrimental effects if you drive the speakers lower in their power range. The Infinities have good reputations, so I've heard, and it looks like a good deal on them, so unless there are any detrimental effects by running 90 watta speakers off a 40 watt amp, I s'pose I'll get the infinity's.
