If an engine blows due to bearing failure, there's no way (that I know of) that you can tell if it was caused by the lack of a harmonic balancer. Therefore, as you said, we will probably not know for a LONG time if removing the balancer in fact does have enough, if any, adverse affect on the rod bearings to cause them to fail.
