The atmosphere would stay until our axial rotation stops. at this point our weather patterns would cease and the equalibrium that keeps everything would come to a grinding halt. But this is a moot point brcause with out the sun the earth would look like a huge comet traveling through space until it is caught in another gavitational field. Maybe then if all the conditions are right. we would re-establish a stable orbit. The frozen water would melt and re seed the planet with an atmopshere. And all of the life cycle would began again. And once civilization flurished long enough, some fellow on a smell Islan in a large ocean would design a mode of transportation and call it a 300zx in what ever lanquage they have at the time. Moral to this story is God doesnt play dice. And humans havent been around enough to really know what life is really about on a grand scale...
