shared. In the back of a DSLAM is an ATM pipe. Ports in the ATM pipe are connected to the Internet(AT&T also can open ports to ATM or Frame Relay Networks as well, the only carrier that can do it). That port is shared amonst all subscribers assigned to it.
Most of the public doesn't realize it, but residential DSL is oversubscribed about 100 to 1.
