In Reply To Ashe, how do you pull an engine out in 2.5 hours? posted by MikeH(Twin GT35BB Incon Z) on October 10, 2002 at 05:04 PM

Message Unbolt mufflers from x-pipe
Remove battery

Jack car up, put on stands.

undercarriage cover (directly under engine)
Radiator shroud
fan
drain coolant
hardpipes
wastegate hoses
radiator
turbo intake pipes
power steering pump (leave connected to hoses, move out of the way) work from over car
alternator (but leave harness and wires connected) work from under car
at this point I would unbolt the AC compressor too
lower engine mount bolts
drain engine and transmission oil
midpipe/x-pipe removal
DS heat shield
driveshaft
shifter base and shifter rod (from under car)
starter
clutch slave cylinder
transmission harness
transmission crossmember bolts (except leave one on each side)
put jack under tranny and remove last two bolts
lower tranny to allow easy access to upper transmission bolts
tranny bolts removed
slide trans back, set on ground under car
remove starter power line bracket from back of engine
disconnect oil cooler hoses and plug with large bolt
disconnect oil pressure harness

top of engine
remove balance tube
pull coil packs
disconnect throttle cable and cruise control cable
disconnect injector lines
disconnect: AAC, FICD, IAC, VTCs, O2s, CAS, CTSs, PTU, EGR harness connectors
unbolt both ground lines on harness to plenum
put harness over top of windshield cowling (to get out of the way)
disconnect heater core hoses
attach chains
loosen engine mount top bolts to allow some flexion so as not to rip them when you pull engine.
Pick that cherry.

One trick is to have all your tools laid out and knowing which tool works best for you. Once you've done it a few times you remember what is the best position to be in to get to your work.

I pulled the engine yesterday wearing dockers and a casual dress shirt. Once they are washed to get the sweat out, I will still be able to wear them around the office. I can do it fast and clean now. :)
Some may want to drain the block before pulling it, there's a 14mm bolt in the side of the block behind the AC compressor bracket. Remove it and put a big bucket under there - the engine holds quite a bit of fluid.
