In an instance where the fine and point assesment is that high, it would behoove you to retain the services of a traffic attorney. Otherwise when you go to court your odds are litterly 1 chance in 10 that the traffic judge will side with you, and even if they do what they will most likely do is reduce the citation to a standard speeding ticket with 4 points which at least here in Florida carries a $90 price tag..add to that mandatory court fees which you have a 75% chance of being assesed unless you have a very leniant judge, and then another $20-$40 in mandatory court improvement fees. Being a prelaw student here at USF I decided to got to court to fight a $180 speeding ticket about 9 months ago...it was the biggest mistake I ever made. The ticketing officer never actually clocked me on radar, and it was recorded on tape him haggling with me over just how fast I was traveling..(I was in my 91' Nissan truck) and he accused me of going 95 mph...which is impossible because I cant get that truck over 80... We haggled on the speed and he finally wrote it as 75 in a 60...15mph over..=$180 A few weeks passed by and I decided to fight it..upon calling the Hillsborough county courthouse to set a court date i was shocked to find they had no record of my citation...but did have a record of me owing $180 for the citation if that makes any sense..so a week passed and the officer coughed up the ticket...they then gave me a court date for 2.5 months later...long story short in the mean time they suspended my license w/out my knowledge for non payment 3 days before my court date (You are not obligated to pay a ticket prior to your court date) I also had to attend driver improvement school before ever having my day in court($35) By the time I got to court it was the most screwed up mess ever. I fought the cop, he got a reprimand and the ticket was reduced to $90 standard 3 point infraction..but on top of that I had to pay court costs $100 and $20 court improvement fees....so my $180 ticket that I won in court ended up costing me $245...The moral of the story unless you retain counsel expect to get bent over and taken, even if you have a pretty damn good grasp of the law.
