At speed, tire spin is not an issue, even with 400+rwhp. The shorter sidewalls on 18" tires don't roll like they do on 15-16" rims. They are also lighter. 17-18" Wheels are a little heavier, but not much, and they allow the use of larger brakes and in the case of TT's the use of wider wheels/tires, for even more grip in the twisties, because they will clear suspension members. If you want handling larger wheels, shorter tires are the route to go. If you want to hook up on launch, smaller wheels larger sidewalls are the way to go.
