I think the real motive for using that engine is because it's probably the cheapest to use for that application. The VQ35 (that's used in the more expensive pathfinder and QX4) would work better but I bet it's a lot more expensive to produce. It probably is close enough to other trucks to get by. I would leave per liter power out of it, though, that is a meaningless term mostly used by ricers to make their slow car seem faster.
