Message I've got lots of insight on this problem, my 90TT died last year and I just got done going thru the whole rebuild process. In short, here are my tips:

1) More than anything, find a shop you TRUST.

2) Plan on spending more $$ than you're thinking... you'll need it. There's gonna be lots of part that are marginal and will need to be replaced. My rebuild uncovered clutch problems, drive shaft wear, and tons of other things that were just easier to replace while the engine was out.

3) Plan on spending more time than you're thinking... you'll need that too. Mine took over 5 months to finally get finished. Patience is a necessity. Problems happen and the machine shop is ALWAYS behind.

4) Don't just slap on larger turbos w/o the injectors and intercoolers to support it. You'll get a lot of boost for while, but you'll end up killing the block in the long run. IMO if you're gonne spend $5k, spend the extra few K to do it right.

I started with a $6k estimate to just swap out the dead engine for a rebuilt block... ended up spending just under $18k for porting, polishing, boring, ceramic coating, intercoolers, injectors, turbos, boost controller, ecu, etc etc and the list goes on.

I'm not saying you should go all out like I did, but while the engine's out and you're looking at $0 labor, it's SOOOO easy to say, "ok, put in the larger this and the bigger that"

Then again, maybe I'm just a sucker... but I DO have 500hp now :-)
