First, you cannot filter one gas from another so your comments about filtration are meaningless. You will need to use some type of absorption or adsorption to remove contaiminants either will cost money to build, require upkeep, require energy to run etc. Compression is of course necessary in all cases and it is just another expense. Again, why do you thing that most methane from land fills (when it is collected at all) is burned on site and not sold? The answer, it cannot compete with methane from gas wells. Actually, the cow fart thing is no more ridiculous than either of your ideas. The cows could be confined to an air tight building and all of the gas piped to treating etc. Most dairy cows already spend most of their lives in pins as do hogs, so why not beef cattle as well. You never answered my question about storms so I guess you just don't want to admit this as a problem. You have not given me any cost data to back up your claims that it can be done cheaply. For each part of Hydrogen produced, you will get one part oxygen. Now you may think that dumping that much oxygen into the atmosphere will not be a problem, but this only shows that you have never tried to deal with oxygen enriched gases (think, what does nitrous oxid do when injected into a car. One thing it does is cause the combustion temperature to go up). Granted, over time all of this extra oxygen will disperse into the atmosphere where it will probably be insignificant. But, this does not happen imediately. Initially the excess oxygen, if just vented, would concentrate around the electrolysis cells. Now it is axiomatic that nothing can be 100% gas tight so there will also be some hydrogen leakage. Lets se now, oxygen+hydrogen+high voltage electricity. Can you say boom. Well, at least we won't have to worry about that hurricane forcasted for next Monday, because our photovoltaic cell array just went up in smoke. Again, do the math. You will see that these approaches are not viable. And I am not being arrogant, I am simply pointing out the problems associated with your ideas. This is what I get paid for (amoung other things) as a consultant so you are getting free service.
