Message	the area surounding the 'perforated' pipe is a chamber. the perforated pipe is a 'baffle'. while it is inherently a 'straight through', the exhaust gases penetrate the chambers and baffles to generate a unique exhaust note. change the baffle design, or the chamber fill material, and you will effectively change the exhaust note.
