Message That is the worst thing you could have done. It's a sure way to crack a block of warp your heads. The hissing sound you heard was caused by the overheat, not the other way around. With all the water you said came out when you removed the cap, you did not have a leak prior to the overheat. Pressure in the system caused a hose to fail, or maybe a clamp. If your car has been sitting for a long time, it's possible the thermostat is stuck, especially if you have used any kind of water additive like Water Wetter or whatever. Those things crystallize over time and can cause all sorts of cooling system problems. The only things that should ever go into a radiator is a good coolent/antifreeze, and distilled water.
