I went through this tranny in great detail with my local Nissan parts manager, who I buy all my stuff from. The 5th gear syncro hub is different and the new syncro will not fit the old hub. The hub AND syncro were both replaced. ALL of the others parts were the same. There were only minor modifications made by nissan, and none of them addressed the 4th gear syncro problem. All of the other items fit with no problems and operated smooth as silk. You are correct that there were changes made, but you have to understand that in order to put some of these new items in, I had to replace other parts of which were not bad, just weren't compatible with the updated parts. Like I said before, it was a costly rebuild for me and after all was said and done, I had just as much into it as I sold it for in parts, not even including the 12 or so hours I spend doing all the work. The problems he has had with ring gears coming off, scorched discs and pressureplates, all that stuff is not on account of the transmission, but rather the clutch system. At one point I warned him about his clutch dragging and if it continues, it will prematurely wear out the syncros because they have to overwork. They will overheat and wear out quickly. All of the information he gave to me about the symptoms and observations he made did NOT point to the transmission, but rather, the clutch system. : First off Nissan doesnt suggest you rebuild the older Z32 transmissions as there has been numerous updates with new syncros and bearings etc etc. This is to fix the problems they had with the earlier trannys. The new parts will not fit in old tranny.
