In simple terms the clutch`s job is to connect the input shaft of the tranny to the engine crankshaft, transferring engine power to the transmission shaft. Though newer transmissions are designed to shift with less effort and be more efficient, they rely on friction(syncronizers) and a bit of well estimated blind luck. When musclecars were in their heyday, transmissions were a different story. they had big, beefy gears and you could literally ram it into a gear without using the clutch. Go ahead and try that with your Z.I`ll be sitting here when you come back and have ground all the teeth off your syncros and the car won`t hold a gear for shit. So yes, the clutch plays a huge role in every shift, up or down, full throttle or granny-ized. A clutch will not in any way generate power, but will hold you back by not clamping with enough force.
