Message I got this idea from Nixit, who in turn got it from Japanese Z'ers and the Subaru guys (incidentally, WRX's can reportedly get 5-10hp out of this mod!).

Anyways, the basic idea is over time, the stock ground contact points become corroded, may throw off some sensor readings, blah blah blah... end result is your Z doesn't run as well. You may notice hesitation, problems starting, etc.

This mod is well worth the time and cost invovled (15 minutes and about $30 respectively).

Here's what I did...

MATERIALS NEEDED:
- grounding bar (optional... you can just connect the various wires directly to the negative battery terminal, but it's much messier looking and more crowded that way)
- 8 gauge wire (there are different temperature ratings, ask for the highest temp stuff) ~20 feet
- ring terminals for 8 gauge wire (with appropriate sized rings for misc bolts in engine bay)
- pliers/crimper/tabletop vise (crimping 8 gauge terminals takes a good deal of force, so I used the vise and just cranked it down)
- sandpaper
- multimeter if you're really anal

All of the above materials can be obtained in the electrical section of Home Depot for ~$30.

So, the procedure is really easy... simply connect the (-) black terminal of your battery to various bolts around the engine bay. My grounding bar had 4 slots, so I had one slot going from the battery to the bar, one going to the intake manifold, and one going to each side of the engine bay. Be sure to sand down the contact surface of both the bolt/washer and the body to ensure good grounding. If you'd like, use a multimeter to make sure that there's continuity between ground and the different bolts you use.

RESULTS:

When I first dropped my new engine into place, it used to start like this: Crank... VROOM!

After about 10,000 miles, it started like this: crank... crank... crank... VROOM!

After the grounding mod: crank... cr... VROOM!

So, now my Z starts much easier, so I know the grounding web is working nicely. As for power gains... who knows... 1-10 hp... pffft... nobody can ever tell about such a small gain.
