The SE model has 190hp, GXE has 160hp. SE has variable timing and the solonoid and sprockests tend to go out around 130k miles, PITA to fix but possible. GXE does not have this option so you sacrifice 30hp but dont have to worry about the VTC problem. The exhaust manafold bolts are the main consern with older Maxima's. The exhaust manafold will bend and break the manafold studs. This is the only real concern I have seen with these cars, most people suggested replacing them after ~100-130k miles before they break. They can be replaced much easier if they are not broken. If they do break you have to drill out the old studs which is very hard to do with the motor in the car. If you get them before they break its not hard to replace them. If you test drive it make sure the odometer works, I found out mine sticks a few days ago, the little motor that turns the odometer starts to stop working with age. Mine will work for about 50 miles then lock up, if I reset the trip meter it start working again. If it helps I got a 93GXE w/116k miles for $5000, blue book was ~$6900. It runs very good, parts are easy to come by and there is some support via maxima.org and [ http://gen3.4mg.com/, ] not as good as tt.net but they are helpful. [ http://www.kalebonline.com/maxima/ ] is another site with some faq info. I'm totally happy with mine, I did find the main crank seal is leaking but that will be replaced when I do the timing belt. Just make sure to check the exhaust manafold bolts, odometer, and just look around at the belts and other stuff to make sure its in good working order. Good luck, John
