In terms of creating a thermal barrier, I've used a company called Swain Coating that makes a product called white lightening (I think you can also drink it) that's made to create a heat barrier for exhaust components such as turbo housings, exhaust manifolds, etc. they claim it can hold up to 2000 degrees F and reduces the skin temp. by around 50%.
