First of all inline engines always weigh a lot more than their V counterparts. Take a look at a I-6 like in the 240Z. Its 2.4l inline 6 weighs more than the VG30ET. Then add this to the fact that aluminum engines don't weigh much less than cast iron engines since you have to make them thicker. They require sleeved cylinders that need a lot of metal around them for support. The aluminum Chevy LS1 doesn't weigh much less than the iron LT1.
Also keep in mind that when the VG30 came out, it was the lightest V6 on the market.
