: your explanation sounds like the variable valve timing of Z engines. but, i think he wants to know about adjustable cam gears (the kinds you put on the front of the cams and manually adjust). anyways, Sam, the amount of valve overlap (i.e. the time that both the exhaust and intake valves are open) is critical to developing good power. if the exhaust valve is open too long, the fresh air can escape out of the cylinder. if it's not open long enough, then the "suction" effect that the escaping exhaust has on "pulling" the fresh air into the cylinder isn't there. by using adjustable cam gears, you can tweak the timing of the valves (b/c the cams are what actuate the valves) to get more power out of your engine. : : Basically when the engine gets to a certain RPM, the adjustable cams get larger in order to produce a longer stroke therefore more compression in the combustion chamber. That equals more HP. I could be totally off but that is how it was explained to me.
