While the weight matters there are more vehicals with as much or more(comparea Full size Merc to an Xterra) weight then SUV's. Your not going to have a case where every 3rd car on the road weighs as much as a Civic. I've seen Roadmasters do as much damage to a light car. These weigh in near what an SUV does. SUV weight aside then major worry is the actions of the driver NOT the weight of the vehical. Yes, a Excursion will smash a Civic without a problem but I know that a Civic driven by some kid racing at 60 into the side an Explorer will make the Explorer look like it was hit by a missle. Bottom line is, while being aware that an SUV can do more damage at a similar speed that a Civic. At higher speeds all bets are off regardless of what you drive!
