Message If you get it straight from Ultima UK, the current kit price minus the engine and transaxle (and shipping) ... and the other few things that any kit car will need (nuts bolts hoses etc) is £14897.00 which is 21,178.67 USD ... so definitely not $50K. The people that run the US distribution company for the Ultima basically just have the job of getting the stuff shipped here (through customs etc). Than they assemble it for a huge sum or sell you the kit marked up by over 100%. Screw that. I would get it straight from the UK.
Although they do suggest the porsche G50 transaxle and the Chevy small block V8, they can taylor the car to whatever needs or desires a person may have. Like I mentioned before, the Twinturbo Alfa Romeo 3.2 liter v6 (500+ hp) is seen quite often in Africa due to its availability there. I don't personally think that the engine makes that big of a difference due to the fact that they recommend everything from the LS1 (light, all aluminum) to the old carbed small black Chevy V8's from the days of yore. The difference between those can be nearly 200 lbs. While I'm not saying that weight distribution isn't important, I don't think that altering the engine choice is going to make that big of a difference. People use V6's and V8's in these ... Heck, McLaren used a V12 in this car. All of them work out well because the car has a low center of gravity and the engine is near the center of the car anyway.
Just some thoughts ... oh, the car can be bought in stages too ... no need to buy the whole thing at once. If you just want the chasis, it's less than $4,000. I think I would probably just buy the chasis, bodywork and wheels (I love their wheels). The rest could be fabricated from existing cars for much less than what they charge (though ti might not be as good).
