I have a friend who is looking at a 300zx that popped up in the area for sale. Its a 93 TT in completely stock condition with only 40K on it. Thing is, the guy is asking $10K for it! He finally found the kick though: quote from his email to me: I did run a CarFax, which came back with a Salvage Title, which the guy already told me it had. But the issue is, the car had damage to the back of the car only. The guy's dad owns a used car lot in Henryville, and they know a guy in Paoli who buys a lot of cars from insurance auctions, and that is where this car came from. The guy had the car fixed for ~$2500 (he found a used hatch, which I'm sure saved a lot), but that is a small amount of damage to have totaled a car that should have a NADA value of ~ $16,000 when you figure the mileage. The car is mint, and the rear is definitely the only area that has been repaired. There is no lower frame damage, and the bolts are all painted and lined up perfectly on the doors, fenders, and front fascia. He said he had to replace the rear bumper cover, taillights, and hatch, and have the vertical section between the hatch and bumper cover straightened out. He said it came to ~$2500. So, I'm just curious how what appears to be so little damage was enough to be a total (which would have to be 75% of the value of the car in KY). Unless, the owner was in good with the insurance company, and was able to convince them to total it. Other than the driver's door needing to be adjusted (it hangs a little low and hits the door fram when you shut it), the car is mint. Silver, charcoal leather, totally awesome. end quoteDo you guys have any advice for him? Should he buy the car?
