So, remember my buddy Dustin with the TTZ that we rebuilt the engine in because of a deep knock and occasional rod slap? Then I checked with Nissan to double check the bearing grades that were ordered and found out that all of them were two grades too small? Well check this shit out.. Yesterday we pulled off all of the accessory belts and cranked up the engine to try and isolate one concerning metal sounding screeching noise. We started the engine so we could hear just that part and guess the f*ck what? The engine sounds GREAT! No ticking, knocking, NOTHING! So I tell him to back it up and put it in first gear and start dragging the clutch a little (to put a load on the crank to make it knock) and the damn thing still wouldn't knock or tick. So I told him to drive it slowly past me in first gear while slightly accellerating and no knock or tick! So we start putting on the accessory belts one at a time. Here's the results.. The screeching noise was the water pump, of which I have seen before and suspected from the get-go.. Here's the kicker, the knocking noise was the damn AC pump pulley bearing and we suspect that it too was responsible for the occasional "TACK!" noise that sounded like a rod slapping the crank. Now here's the weird part. The crank bearings ARE the wrong size, by two grades, but the engine sounds great. How can this be so? Someone please explain.
