I think the most important thing is to have your engine producing its peak HP throughout the run. If you've ever watched the fast V8 guys at the track, it sounds like the car goes all the way down the track at one steady RPM. They don't wind through the gears, they have a torque converter that keeps their engine revving near the RPM the engine makes its peak HP output. Those trannies are not nearly as efficient as a manual or an auto with lockup, but they do allow the engine to stay at peak HP RPM by slipping the torque converter almost the whole time.
I guess you have to weigh your options and figure out which way you'll lose more HP- by having losses due to an inefficient tranny, or by having your engine running below its peak output RPM.
