Jorden. This is the series I used in college. If you are serious about it and really put your mind to it, you can do this on your own. If you can get through the first book, you'll be able to understand a lot... if you can get through the second book, you'll be able to hold conversations with some pretty good content. If you can, get the CDs/tapes that come with the books... that's key. If you don't have much time to commit to it, check out "Japanese for Busy People"... with minimal effort, you'll be able to barely scrape by with communication. After just doing the first two books in the Jordan series, I could handle myself with confidence when I arrived in Japan. But, after living in Japan for a month, my language skills practically doubled. Nothing beats totally immersing yourself in the environment... after six months of living in Japan I was dreaming and cursing in Japanese... lol. But, the next best thing would be to find a Japanese conversation class or group... often the Japanese Consulates will sponsor these kind of things for free. Also, try to rent a bunch of Japanese anime... stupid as it may seem, you'll be amazed at how many little phrases you can pick up watching this stuff... especially the slang phrases that you can use with friends, instead of the formal stuff you'll learn in the books. Watch the Initial D series which is available for free download from Animepad... somebody posted a link here a few weeks ago. You'll learn a lot of car related phrases which will be useful for your friends. If you've got any questions, feel free to shoot me an e-mail.
