Even though people here don't have examples of bearing failure (extreme case), the regular pulley makes the car nicer to drive. Personally, I'd rather not even gamble with the health of my bearings or crankshaft. A crank is at least $600! It's kind of like the stock flywheel...slower on acceleration but it smooths out the power delivery in the lower RPMs. The crank-pulley shouldn't make that much difference anyway, because having the peripheral pulleys underdriven would yield approx the same result. If you race a lot, and every little thing needs to be done to reduce your 1/4 mile by .01 seconds, then the crank-pulley seems like a good idea.
