When the bearing goes, the rod slaps around on the crank and it will break it. The problem with proving what you are asking for is that there are other factors that can make a bearing go bad. Perhaps a manufacturing problem, perhaps low on oil, oil contaminated, etc. The thing you need to seriously consider is wrapped up in the physics bottle. It is rather simple physics too so if you haven't taken any courses on it, the description that Tim linked to explains it incredibly well. : they want to sell you? Show me a case where a pulley has been proven to be at fault for a spun bearing or a blown engine.
