Message I was getting myself prepared to sell the Z and in the process I thought I'd pull the Carfax just to see and have it available. Well, Carfax has an entry in '94 that is unsupported by their own report- like saying your house burned down (even though its standing) with no report or history of a fire or any other event for that matter. I've pulled other reports- NMVTIS, NICB, AutoCheck (just because), current title and a letter from the DMV of the state in question at Carfax's request- and there's nothing to support Carfax's claim, it actually contradicts their report. Yet the "Resolution Specialist" I've been talking to just replies to the States letter (and I'm paraphrasing): I know they say there wasn't an event, but because it was so long ago maybe they just don't have any records. I've requested information about their record such as the source and additional details and they just ignore it (any correspondence I receive doesn't acknowledge my request for additional information). I've spent many weeks going back and forth with this guy and I swear their procedure is to just annoy and brush off any complaints until we just get frustrated and go away.
I think the next steps are to go with a BBB complaint and then the State AG.
I've owned the Z for 22 years and I'm still driving it. I know Carfax isn't the official record, just a reporting company, but this process has been infuriating. Given the age of the record (1994) it could have been a clerical mistake, which would actually explain everything. I've also thought that maybe Carfax doesn't have information to back up their report and that's why they wont turn over any additional information- there isn't any (which would also explain things because if you have a valid record why not present it and close the issue?).

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Conversation between my sister and my wife (shortly before we
got married):
Wife: "You know, sometimes I think he loves that Z more than he
does me."
Sister: "He probably does, and as long as you're okay with that,
everything will be fine."
