Message Like you, I installed a '98 to fend off any potential old age problems. My original unit would not accept 1st until slowing to 2 or 3 mph. Not a clutch issue, no grinding, shifter could not be moved. Things improved some after warm-up.

The '98 behaves practically the same. Some say a deliberate design, but the fact remain 5 mph is too slow for 2nd, and you have to slow down to near stop to engage 1st. Maybe the synchro teeth are too blunt.

Now after 2K and a lot of work, I have an additional problem; the whine you describe. In mine the noise is while driving under mild load. Not too bothersome as of yet. Have read part number is unavailable, due to the trans not being in any domestic parts book. I have not tried to find one. The input shaft comes out easy by removing the bolted on front plate. Bearing replacement is likely not too difficult.
