It was decided years ago by builders and tuners that a factory damper isn't necessary for the VG for most users. It was likely added from the factory for user experience improvement, helping clutch engagement and mildly damping engine nvh. For race applications, an ATI damper is recommended, as the engine is likely to experience sustained high RPM and power much more than a street car.
