It's not that hard to make contact with the antenna. It doesn't take much to damage it. When it is fully extended its almost as long as a fishing rod. Working on the car or cleaning the car plus having limited space could make it a lot more likely. Personally, I never replaced mine. Ever since I bought the car, it came out only about a foot and retracted all the way when off. That's how I prefer it.
