they are like a std open end wrench, so the inner surface is curved instead of pointed, meaning only 2 edges of the nut are in contact, instead of 4 that you could have if it fit better. So I just twist it right off the nut. Not only that, I bend the freaking bracket that holds the filter. But it will NOT win. It is only a hunk of metal, and I have opposable thumbs and a tool box that would kill someone if it fell on them :-)
